The Copyright Society: “Steals, Deals and Newly Spliced Reels”
Thursday, May 20, 2021, 12pm – 1:30pm PDT
New music combining portions of earlier works with newly added elements – often assembled using third party “beats” and melody packs – has increased dramatically. Thousands of remixes, mashups, and re-records are circulating internationally on streaming and social media platforms. At the same time, ground-breaking legacy catalog acquisitions are taking place, creating vast opportunities for new uses of iconic compositions, recordings and name and likeness rights, sometimes along with delicate issues of consent and creative control. This expert panel will discuss and demonstrate the creation of remixes and mashups, as well as structuring catalog acquisition deals with an eye towards new uses such as licensing iconic artists’ works for biopics and music documentaries.
