“THE ROYALTY ROADMAP: ARE YOU COLLECTING EVERYTHING YOU’RE OWED?”
An expert panel will outline the different types of music royalties that artists, songwriters and publishers can earn, the best way to obtain those royalties, and which existing organizations are responsible for collecting and distributing them. As much a roadmap for beginners as it is a valuable refresher for experienced music industry veterans, we will discuss various types of music rights (performance rights, mechanicals, neighboring rights, synchronization, etc.) as well as best practices for collecting each of these royalty types in the current industry landscape.

Biographies:
David Streit | Creative Director, BMI
David Streit is an Associate Director of Creative at Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), Los Angeles. In this role, David is responsible for discovering and signing songwriters, producers and artists in the dance, electronic, pop and indie genres and advancing showcases, workshops and panels aimed at education and supporting the creative community. David helps facilitate songwriter-’centric events such as “BMI’s Acoustic Lounge” and “Speed Dating for Songwriters®” and developed the new creative networking event, “Show and Tell.”
Prior to BMI, Streit had his own Artist Management company, IDKLOL Management LLC, where he managed clients ranging from pop producers to electronic dance music DJ’s, and also has a background as a composer, creating original works for commercials, video games and movies. Streit holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film Production from Chapman University.
David Schneider | AVP, Distribution and Administration Services, BMI
David Schneider is AVP, Distribution & Administration Services at (BMI) Broadcast Music, Inc. in Nashville. In this role, Schneider and his team are responsible for ensuring that BMI receives and processes billions of digital performance data each quarter from BMI’s licensees including major digital platforms, radio stations, and more to support accurate royalty distributions to BMI’s songwriters, composers, and music publishers. In addition, Schneider works with multiple internal teams to develop new distribution methodologies that increase efficiencies, create quality controls and improve customer service to affiliates.
Schneider joined BMI in 2018 as an Executive Director and was promoted to his current role in 2019. Before coming to BMI, he held positions at Pandora as a Partner Manager and Music Publishing Operations and prior to Pandora, he worked at BMG Rights Management as the Senior Director of Royalties and the Harry Fox Agency as Senior Client Advisor.
Schneider holds a B.A. in English from Boston University and a Master’s degree in Performing Arts Administration from New York University.
Ernst Jacob Bakker | Partner, Zanoise
After finishing his music studies at the conservatory of Amsterdam, Ernst worked for a decade at the Dutch PRO Buma/Stemra in various capacities. Ernst joined the Fintage House group in 2000. As Fintage’s EVP for music publishing and neighboring rights he was instrumental in the development of its leading rights administration platform, collecting neighboring rights royalties for many world famous artists.
After the sale of Fintage’s music division to Kobalt Music Ernst established the Zanoise Group to provide bespoke services to music rightsholders, including performing artists.
In his spare time, Ernst is a member of the supervisory board of a famous pipe organ builder and the conductor of an elderly choir.
Mark Frieser | Founder and CEO, Sync Summit & Disconic
Mark Frieser is the Founder and CEO of the music licensing educational and events platform Sync Summit (https://syncsummit.com) and the music licensing agency, Disconic (https://disconic.com). Mark’s work in technology, music and entertainment began in high school as a journalist for the long-island based music magazine Good Times (https://goodtimesmag.com) in 1983. Since then, Mark’s worked as a technologist and executive at companies that include Nielsen, Jupiter Communications, News Corporation, iVillage, IDT, Jerusalem Venture Partners, Women Japan, Hachette and Llagardere and founded the mobile music consultancy Consect. Beyond that, he attended Queens College and the Sorbonne and continues to be obsessed with discovering and sharing the next big thing in tech and music.
Serona Elton | Head of Educational Partnerships, The Mechanical Licensing Collective
Serona Elton has extensive experience as a music industry professional and educator. She is currently the Head of Educational Partnerships for The MLC. She is also a professor, the Associate Dean of Administration, and Director of the Music Industry Program at the University of Miami Frost School of Music, as well as a Yamaha Master Educator. She has worked for major music companies such as Warner Music Group, where she held the position of Vice President, Product Management, and EMI Recorded Music, North America, where she was Vice President, Mechanical Licensing and Repertoire Data Services. She has also provided consulting services to Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Zumba Fitness, and other music-related companies.
She has served as a president of the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA), as a trustee of the Copyright Society of the U.S.A., as the chair of the Florida Bar Entertainment, Arts, and Sports Law Section, and on the Recording Academy, Florida Chapter, Board of Governors. She is a licensed attorney in New York and Florida. Her areas of expertise include mechanical licensing, royalties, contract summarization and management, rights management, record company operations and music industry information management.
Steve Weatherby | Senior Vice President, Label and Artist Partnerships, Ingrooves
Steve Weatherby is the SVP, Artist and Label Partnerships for Ingrooves Music Distribution. His experience lies in Rights & Royalties and he has worked in the music industry for almost three decades including stints with major labels, publishers and business management firms. In 2012 he co-founded Sovereign Music, an independent rights management company that focused on downstream artist royalty accounting, mechanical royalties, SoundExchange, neighboring rights, global publishing administration and distribution. Sovereign grew quickly and was later acquired by Ingrooves Music in 2017. Steve now handles business development for Ingrooves Music, which includes new business strategy, as well as educating and supporting independent labels on their Rights & Royalty offerings.
